Genius Hour - Let's Do Some Yoga
10:02:00I am so excited to be doing my first ever genius hour project in my Teaching Digital Learners class.
Genius hour is actually a concept that was inspired by Google. In an effort to increase workplace happiness and productivity, the company allows their employees and researchers to spend 20% of their time working on whatever it is that they want. Teachers took this concept and turned it into the Genius Hour Movement.
This movement allows students to work on a project based on whatever topic they choose for a set period of class time. In hopes to enhance student engagement and motivation, they are allowed to follow their passions entirely and create and learn about something that they want. During a Genius Hour project, students become the directors or the authors of their own learning.
In order for us future teachers to gain a better understanding of the immense possibilities and benefits of the genius hour movement, we ourselves are participating in a genius hour project, based on whatever we want.
I decided to tackle a goal oriented project for my genius hour.
By October 25th, I will be able to hold an elbow stand for at least 30 seconds.
I chose this as my genius hour project because I wish I dedicated more time in my life to yoga and I saw this as the perfect opportunity to do so. I love yoga because it makes me so much more relaxed mentally and a lot healthier physically. An elbow stand is a very popular yoga inversion so I am excited to learn how to do one.
In order to reach my goal of an elbow stand by October 25th, I will need to:
- increase my shoulder and arm strength
- increase my core strength for stability
- work on my balance and finding my centre of gravity
- extend my yoga capabilities
- practice, practice, practice!
*I imagine a lot lot of my genius hour project is going to consist of face plants, bruised knees, and really sore arms and shoulders. But hopefully the end product will be worth it!
